The time has come to begin raising money and preparing for the 2012 Speedo Sprint! ASAP has partnered with several other great groups including the ASAP Daisies, and the Albany All Stars Roller Derby Team.
What does a philanthropic group whose motto is "relax and encourage" do when they need an amazing winter event? In the fall of 2006 the Albany Society for the Advancement of Philanthropy asked themselves this question and decided that the most reasonable course of action was to find a way to strip down to their skivvies and run through Washington Park. That year over 50 ASAPers and friends donned speedos, santa hats, and slightly ashamed expressions as they braved frigid temperatures to raise over $5000 for the Albany Damien Center.
Since its inaugural run the race has grown in numbers and shortened in distance (we're now a .8k--that's point-8 kilometers). We've also moved to the middle of Lark Street to increase our exposure. In 2009 over 150 runners and 1000 spectators helped raise $15000 for the Albany Damien Center. It turns out running through the streets in your underwear is a surprisingly socially acceptable activity. If you're thinking about running take the plunge: most of our runners are former spectators who couldn't resist the allure of the cool December breeze.
Don't waste any time and start collecting sponsors today. Here's you pledge sheet: here. It is worth it if only for the askance looks you'lll elicit from your co-workers.
If you want to start as a spectator please come and donate and bear witness to some of the bravest philanthropists in Albany in their 6th year strong!
